The State Library was founded in 1833 as the Library Royal. Its first chief librarian and bibliographer was Jan Hrubý, who made his immense private collection the basis of the new library. Within three years, until 1836, the stocks had grown to 290,000 volumes. Starting in the same year, all publishers were obliged to hand in a deposit copy of their works. Since 1851, the Library has published the National Bibliography of Slovertia.
There were significant additions in 1855, when the State Library took over many of the libraries and collections of the South Mazurians.  In 1860, holdings encompassed 1.9 million volumes, so that they had to be stored in two different locations in Brativas.

The Library's holdings today encompass more than 7 million titles. One of the characteristic cornerstones of the State Library, which characterizes every national library, is the formation of the collection of national literature, its eternal storage and long-term access.

Located on  Square, the Neo-Renaissance structure was built in 1829 during the time of The Kingdom of Slovertia. It was opened as the State Library in 1833. The Ganymede fountain located in front of the theatre was built in 1840. The building was restored between 1986 and 1989, when a new modern technical building was added behind the old structure. The design of the new building was created in the 1980's, and construction started in 1986. Due to a lack of funds, the building was under construction for 19 years, which increased the planned costs from 400 million to almost 4 billion Sloverti crowns. The building was finally opened in 2005.
