The Third Lucis Civil War is a major conflict fought between the Lucis Commonwealth led by Noctis Lucis Caelum and the Lucis Republicans led by former Lucian General Iedolas Aldercapt. The conflict was a result of Ardyn Izunea's installment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the United Kingdom parliamentary elections, 2017 in June 2017 in which his win ended up being very controversial and a scandalous one. This triggered violent protests in Shinjiku and Insomnia in which Izunea declared Martial Law as a way to solve the protests but it grew even more and more violent before September.

In August 2017, Izunea launched the Lucis Parliament Referendum, 2017, which was a move to replace the form of government with a full republican government, which would result in replacing the Parliament with the Congress or a People's Congress as Izunea stated. The referendum failed to meet Izunea's expectations and the protest reached even in Lestallum and in Fleuret City. In mid-August, headlines were making headaway that the First Minister of Tenebrae, Iedolas Aldercapt was suddenly increasing military presence in Tenebrae but Izunea, in a press conference stated that it was to increase military numbers in Tenebrae, in which Tenebrae had the least number of bases due to its rocky and mountainous terrain.

By early September, it seemed evident that there are conspiracies that Aldercapt was in talks with Izunea that a full republican take over could only be ensured if the military took action. With the military presence increasing in Tenebrae seemed as a proof, Lucis Army Field Marshal Snow Villiers prepared a civilian evacuation to Aomori but the people west of Lucis and Insomnia, only a few were able to leave due to the Martial Law being in effect. King Noctis was in full aware of the conspiracies and declared a state of emergency (which was one of the royal prerogatives in the UK). With the declaration of the state of emergency, the powers of the parliament were acted by the Monarch. Australian Prime Minister Hibari Nanatsuki declared that Austrakiba would stand beside the Lucis Crown.

In September 30, 2017; Republican troops from Tenebrae marched to Accordo and Lucis, effectively fulfilling the conspiracies and the Third Lucis Civil War erupted. This took the Lucis Armed Forces by surprise with most of the republican troops being enlisted from the reserve army. Immediately, Aomorinese First Minister Himeko Shiraki offered the King and the Royal Family refuge in Aomori and sent the reserve Aomorinese troops to the Lucis Mainland. By late November, Insomnia had come under Republican influence, leaving 3,756,345 civilians trapped inside the capital with Lestallum being the last haven for the escapees.
