The premier (Geatish: statsminister; literally "Minister of State") is the head of government of the Geatish Realm. The premier forms and chairs meetings of the Cabinet of Geatland, advises the monarch of Geatland on the excercise of her executive authority, and represents the executive before the Riksdag, the country's legislature. By convention, the premier is a member of the Folkting, the lower house of the Riksdag, and he relies on the Folkting's confidence in order to maintain his position.
Initially, Geatland did not have a premier figure, as all executive power was vested in and excercised by the Crown. However, following the Engström Revolt, constitutional monarchy came to Geatland with the signing of the Constitution of Geatland in 1867. The Constitution provided for the position of premier, who was nominally only the chief advisor to the monarch and his representative in the Riksdag. The first premier, Leo von Heidenstam, was chosen the same year, and his premiership founded many of the customs and conventions of the Geatish premier's office. Following the Great War, the premier, rather than the monarch, became the chief source of de facto executive authority, while the monarch was reduced to a ceremonial figurehead.
The current premier is Karl Nilsson Jung, whose FOLK party won the 2018 Geatish Riksdag elections and removed Labour Party leader Emil Persson from power.
