Appleton is a city in Shelby County, West Monroe, on Apple Creek which the city is named for. The 2020 Census enumerated the population as 34,925, making Appleton the smallest incorporated municipality in Shelby County

The City of Appleton has a council–manager government, with 6 city council members, a mayor, and a city manager. The Appleton Independent School District encompasses Appleton and the eastern third of Shelby County.

Government

Appleton in comparison to the Ibican average leans more conservative politically. However, the city leans more liberal than Shelby County and the West Monroe averages.

Federal government

Appleton falls under West Monroe's 25th congressional district, which is currently represented by Conservative Toni Travers. The senators who represent West Monroe are Royston Hoggard and Diann Blakeslee, who are both Conservatives.

State government

In the West Monroe House of Representatives, Appleton falls under district 90 and is represented by Conservative Janna Kidd, who is a resident of Appleton. In the West Monroe Senate Appleton falls under district 53 and is represented by Conservative Gerald Marley.

Municipal government

According to the city's 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, Appleton's various funds had $38.8 million in revenue, $43.7 million in expenditures, $85.7 million in total assets, $5.3 million in total liabilities, and $14.9 million in cash and investments.

The City of Appleton has a council-manager form of government. The city is divided into six city council districts, and the mayor is elected by a citywide vote. All elected positions are elected on a nonpartisan ballot. The city council's responsibility is to make all legislative and policy decisions, while the responsibility of the city manager is to decide all administrative decisions.
