Oriental officially known as Republic of the Eastern Bank of the Río de la Plata is a South American country located in the southeastern part of the continent. It is bordered by Brazil to the northeast, the Twenty Three Provinces to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Oriental covers an area of approximately 181,034 square kilometers (69,893 square miles) and has a diverse landscape that includes rolling plains, low hills, and a long coastline. It's capital and largest city is Monte, also the seat of the central government.
History
Pre-Columbian Era and European Settlement
The region of Oriental was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Charrúa and Guarani tribes. In the early 16th century, European explorers arrived, and in 1516, Juan Díaz de Solís, a Spanish navigator, became the first recorded European to reach the territory. However, it was not until the 17th century that European settlement began in the area.
The Portuguese established a settlement in the region in 1680, leading to disputes with the Spanish, who also claimed the territory. The conflicting claims were ultimately resolved in 1777 when the Treaty of San Ildefonso awarded the region to Spain. Uruguay, including Oriental, then became part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata.
Independence and Formation of Oriental
In the early 19th century, the region experienced political turmoil as various factions sought independence from Spanish rule. On August 25, 1828, Oriental declared its independence from Spain and joined forces with the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (which later became the Twenty Three Provinces). However, disagreements arose between the two regions, and on August 27, 1828, the Treaty of Monte established Oriental as a separate nation, the Republic of the Eastern Bank of the Río de la Plata.
Modern Era
During the 20th century, Oriental faced several periods of political instability, including military dictatorships and democratic transitions. However, the country managed to maintain a strong democratic tradition and establish a stable political system.
In recent decades, Oriental has focused on promoting social development, human rights, and economic growth. It has been recognized for its efforts in areas such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Oriental's economy is diversified, with sectors such as agriculture, services, manufacturing, and tourism contributing to its development.
Geography and Climate
Oriental is known for its diverse natural beauty, encompassing varied landscapes from rolling plains to hilly areas. The country's terrain includes fertile river valleys, grasslands, and small mountains in the north.
The climate of Oriental is temperate (Cfa) and characterized by mild summers and cool winters. The Atlantic Ocean influences the coastal regions, while the interior experiences a more continental climate. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year, although winter tends to be wetter than summers.
