Etymology
Name of the Lotus Isles
According to the old Tokutese scribes, written in the old Kanji, the name Lotus Isles (蓮島 — Isles of Lotus) stems from when initial settlers first touched Kajima Island. When the settlers arrived they found the island covered with extensive fields of blooming lotus flowers drifting peacefully on quiet waters. The surrounding islands received the name Lotus Isles as the first Tokutese settlers honored its natural beauty and symbolism by giving it the title because lotus flowers symbolize purity combined with enlightenment and strength.
Name of the Country
Although the word Tokuto (とくと) could be directly translated as "a land without haste" or "nation of the diligent", the name likely originates from a combination of words in the old Kanji writing system. It combines Toku (匿 — shelter, shield) and Tomoshi (魂 — Godling of life or soul handler) which together meant "a place where the Tomoshi protects you". After the introduction of the new writing system in the 1800s, the original name Tokutomoshi (匿魂) was rewriten as Tokuto (とくと) translating to "land where the spirit resides".
