Non-Commissioned Officers

Non-commissioned Officers and Non-officer Ranks, OR-ranks and ER-ranks, respectively, advance based on how long one has been an Non-commissioned Officer or how long one has been a specialist. It is not uncommon that a person skips the ER-2 and/or ER-3 rank to get to the OR-1 rank. Those who attend college under a special Officers Program may enter service as a ER-3 pr OR-1 rather than starting as an ER-1. Enlisting during college allows one to count time at college as part of their years of service. It only takes one year to certify as a specialist outside of college, but taking an exam right after college can allow Officer Program graduates to skip the certification course.
