From Middle Menapian rhoew, rhoeu, from Old Menapian hroew, hroeu, shroew, shroeu, from Primitive Menapian θreβ, from Proto-Bythonic aθreβ, from Proto-Celtic *attrebā. Cognate with Welsh athref. Borrowed by English as roo.
