The Coup d'état of November Sixth or the November Incident (11월 사태) was a mutiny which took place on November 6, 2023, in Joseon. November Incident is a mercenary coup led by some senior members of the government and some "social leaders."
Background
Deputy Prime Minister Heo Joonghyuk and Vice-Director of the National Intelligence Service On Soo-chan prepared for the coup by exploiting information gathered by NIS for the purpose of overthrowing the regime and seizing power. In the process, they recruited Park Shinwoong, a senior police officer, and Jung Chung Ah, the president of the Social Pillar Foundation, and they prepared for the coup by hiring mercenaries and smuggling weapons from various parts of the country and abroad.
While coup forces were preparing for a coup, Archinia supported the coup d'etat forces with the aim of revising Joseon's diplomatic policy and securing tax havens. The types of support were manpower and weapons, and the government of Archinia and the Embassy of Archinia in Joseon were involved in the process.
However, one of the NIS agents involved in the coup revealed the coup plot to Park Joo Tae, the NIS director at the time. In response, Park Joo Tae and then Prime Minister Jeong Dohyung launched a secret operation to identify loyalists within the government and uncover coup participants.
Shortly before the coup, the coup participants caused an internal division. Heo Joonghyuk established a plan to exclude On Soo-chan from the coup d'état and also to exclude him from the distribution of power. However, in the process, On Soo-chan noticed an internal division and imprisoned Heo Joonghyuk and other senior participants before starting the coup. And On Soo-chan called in mercenaries earlier than originally planned to launch a coup.
The course of the incident
The 600 mercenaries mobilized for the coup infiltrated Seoul after being divided into several civilian vans. They approached Cheong Wa Dae, the prime minister's office, unimpeded, and then killed the sentinels and launched an attack on Cheong Wa Dae.
The response of the military command
3 platoons of troops of the 1st Security Group guarding Cheong Wa Dae responded shortly after the occurrence of the engagement, but they lost control of much of the building due to inferior troop numbers. One battalion of troops outside Cheong Wa Dae was unable to enter Cheong Wa Dae due to a surprise attack by mercenaries.
General Jeong Tae-Shin, who was briefed on the coup by General Yoon Joohee, called up troops from the Capital Defense Command and military units around Seoul to respond. The troops from The 8th Maneuver Division and The 26th Maneuver Division, units of the VII Maneuver Corps, the closest armored unit to Seoul, departed from Yangju, Gyeonggido Province for Seoul shortly after the coup. Meanwhile, troops of the Army Aviation Command and Army Special Warfare Command were also urgently called to enter Seoul.
Meanwhile, The Meridonian Navy's 2 Amphibious Ready Group, which was sailing off the coast of Gunsan, dispatched troops from the 4 Battalion Marine Commando to Seoul via helicopter at the order of Meridon Defense Forces, which received a request for assistance from the Joseon government. The troops of the Regiment Marines Commando were divided into two units, with one unit heading to Cheong Wa Dae and the other heading to the National Assembly building in Yeouido. And both units participated in the engagement upon arrival.
The suppression of a coup
Due to the chaos in leadership caused by divisions within the coup forces, the coup did not go as closely as it had been. The mercenaries who were supposed to be mobilized for the coup were only half of their original plans, and their movements were discovered by the military, giving the military time to respond.
Archinia stopped supporting the coup d'etat after learning that On Soo-chan, the mastermind of the coup, was involved in Leviathan. During the coup, Archinia authorities contacted the imperial family of Joseon and Chief Justice Park Yohan to provide information about the coup.
Troops of the Regiment Marines Commando secured the safety of Prime Minister Jeong Dohyung while fighting mercenaries inside and outside Cheong Wa Dae. Shortly thereafter, troops from The 8th Maneuver Division entered Cheong Wa Dae and suppressed all remaining mercenaries. At the same time, mercenaries near the National Assembly were all subdued by troops from the Regiment Marines Commando and The 26th Maneuver Division.
Meanwhile, mercenaries, who were operating a disturbance operation at Gwanghwamun Square, broke into a broadcasting station building and held broadcasting company employees hostage. Soon after, the mercenaries were surrounded by troops from the Capital Defense Command and were killed by troops from the Regiment Marines Commando and the 707th Special Missions Group. No hostage damage was caused in this process.
Shortly after the end of the armed conflict in Seoul, the troops of the 2nd Marine Division stormed the coup leadership's hideout and arrested all the coup leaders.
Aftermath
The coup leadership was all arrested and put on trial by the military authorities. In June 2024, heo Joonghyuk and On Soo-chan were sentenced to death in the third trial, while Park Shinwoong and Jung Chung Ah were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The attempted coup has severely damaged the leadership of Prime Minister Jeong Dohyung. Although his approval rating did not drop significantly, Jeong Dohyung resigned in late November. The ruling party nominated Park Yohan as its prime ministerial candidate shortly after Jeong Dohyung's resignation, and in December 2023, Park Yohan went through an election process in the National Assembly to become prime minister.
The troops and commanders of Meridonian Navy's 2 Amphibious Ready Group, who contributed greatly to the suppression of the coup, received commendations from the Joseon government.
Archinia put government officials who participated in the support of the coup on trial and punished them. This measure prevented the then-conflict from escalating, but diplomatic relations between Joseon and Archinia deteriorated dramatically.
