Candidates ran under a nonpartisan blanket primary in May, with Theodore Hendricks and Susan Nicholas receiving the most and second-most votes, respectively. Hendricks ultimately prevailed over Nicholas by a margin of around 12 points. As expected, Hendricks and Nicholas both decisively won their respective home counties.
Hendricks received almost 41% of the popular vote in the primary election, the strongest showing by far by any candidate in the nation's 16-year history.
