Gretchen Whitmer, the former governor of the state and her running mate Pete Buttigieg, secured over 36% of the popular vote and won the state's 15 electoral votes, marking the first time since 2016 in which a third party candidate won electoral votes, and the first time since 1968 in which a third party candidate won a state's popular vote. The Whitmer/Buttigieg ticket defeated the incumbent Republican ticket of JD Vance and Ron DeSantis and the challenging Democratic ticket of Gavin Newsom and Cory Booker.
