The area that is now Willamette was solely inhabited by {{wp|Native Americans}} from about 20,000 years ago until the mid-16th century when {{wp|Spanish Empire|Spanish}} traders began sending vessels northeast from the {{wp|Philippines}}, riding the {{wp|Kuroshio Current}} in a sweeping circular route across the northern part of the Pacific. The {{wp|Lewis and Clark Expedition}} traversed Oregon in the early 1800s, and the first permanent European settlements in Oregon were established by fur trappers and traders. In 1843, an autonomous government was formed in the {{wp|Oregon Country}}, and the {{wp|Oregon Territory}} was created in 1848, and was split in 1853 forming the {{wp|Washington Territory}}.
