The Republic of Aonaria is a roughly tear drop shaped island in the North Pacific Ocean south of Kodiak Island, Alaska and West of Vancouver Island, Canada. Aonaria is approximately 46,502 km2 in area making it the world’s 31st largest island. As well as the main island there are several smaller islands off the northern point of Aonaria proper as well as to the west of it. The centre of the island is made up of a series of mountain ranges which run from north to south the highest point of these ranges is Kwiigáay meaning mass of clouds in the form of Northern Haida language spoken on the island by its native peoples commonly referred to in the modern day simply as Aonarian or Aonarian Haida. The island is punctuated by fjords and inlets all around its coast however the west coast is considerably more rugged than the east. The island has several large rivers which drain it. Aonaria experiences an Oceanic climate with long mild winters and short cool summers, snowfall is common with average summer temperatures of around 10°C and average winter temperatures of 0-3°C. Rainfall is extremely common.

The majority of the nation’s 212,000 people live in the south east around the capital Iphigenia which is named after the ship of the oceanographer William Douglas where the eventual capital was first set up as a fur trading post.

Aonaria was the home place of the Aonarian Haida peoples for thousands of years and was later explored by Europeans including James Cook on his third voyage. Fur traders William Douglas and John Meares both stayed on the island and set up trading outposts which led to the permanent settlement of the island. It was not until 1861 that the Colony of Aonaria was founded under the Aonarian Constitution Act which set up a parliament and governor. Later a British Naval Base was established and the population of the island increased due to colonisation spurred on by advantageous trading routes and the islands resources. Iphigenia became the capital of the Colony of Aonaria in 1864. Aonaria did not join Canada following its confederation in 1867 owing to a separate sense of identity or lack of Canadian identity, opposition from political leaders on the island and anti-confederation sentiment amongst the population. Aonaria later became a Dominion in 1911.

Following the adoption of the Statute of Westminster in 1949 Aonaria becoming increasingly independent. Later in 1982 following a referendum Aonaria became a republic, leaving the Commonwealth altogether and adopting a new constitution which saw the monarch of Great Britain replaced with an elected President as head of state. The referendum passed with 73% of the vote in favour.

The nation’s main economic sectors are tourism, fisheries, service industries as well as oil and gas reserves.
