Joaquim I of Coventrey nicknamed the the heretic (12 August 1258 - 10 January 1300) succeeded his father Guilherme I as the 3rd King of Coventrey in 1275 reigning until he was deposed by a combined faction of nobles and clergy in 1299, imprisoned and replaced by his younger brother Afonso II. Within three months of his disposition he was dead; rumors of his murder circulating throughout the royal courts.
During his reign of over twenty years all manner of crimes were attributed to him earning him the honour of being the most hated king in the history of Coventrey.
His apparent neglect of the clergy and his encroachment on the rights of the church in the kingdom are believed to have led to clergy having abandoned him as a heretic. His brother was brought from abroad and declared king by the factions hostile to Joaquim. The supporters of Joaquim rallied to his cause and fought the would be usurper outside Santo Domingo.
The forces of Joaquim were defeated outside the gates of Santo Domingo, and Joaquim was captured and later imprisoned in the palace. Joaquim was deposed and three months later he was dead.
He died in 1300, survived only by a daughter whose right to rule in Coventrey was ignored.
