According to the Selenian Constitution, the country is a federation of subjects wherein the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government. The country is supposed to function as a multi-party representative democracy with the Federal Government consisting of three different branches.
- Legislature: consists of the State Duma and the Federation Council, which make up the Federal Assembly.
- Executive: made up by the President, who then appoints the Cabinet, including the Prime Minister.
- Judiciary: made up by the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court, and the lower federal courts. Judges are appointed by the Federation Council by recommendation of the President and Prime Minister. They have the power to interpret, rule on, and overturn the law should it be deemed unconstitutional.
