The Free Land of Otanga is a large, safe nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, frequent executions, and compulsory military service. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 98 million Otangans have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
The relatively small government juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Defense. The average income tax rate is 15.9%, but much higher for the wealthy.
The Otangan economy, worth 5.22 trillion dollars a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Book Publishing industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Trout Farming. Average income is 53,283 dollars, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 3.0 times as much as the poorest.
RPG fans reminisce fondly about when people thought they were evil and dangerous rather than geeky and socially inept, all major public areas are watched by police surveillance cameras, lines of trenches demarcate the nation's borders, and the constant playing of Merry Birthday on Otangan radio has led to calls for the song to be classified as a crime against humanity. Crime, especially youth-related, is almost non-existent, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Otanga's national animal is the Duck, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
