RBS Fernlesen, commonly abbreviated and referred to as RFL, was a teletext service provided by the Radictistani national broadcaster, the Radictistan Broadcasting Service. RFL followed the WST standard for teletext. Like all such systems, RFL used the vertical blanking interval of an analog television signal to transmit text and basic graphics. RFL was provided through the signal of RBS One, the flagship news channel of the RBS. RFL was a popular source for daily news, sports, and weather information for millions of Radictistanis who are unable or unwilling to pay for home internet access. RFL was shut off on February 17, 2020 along with all other analog television services in Radictistan.

Content

RFL was used mostly for displaying news, weather reports, sports updates, and financial information such as stock and commodities prices. The system was also used to deliver subtitles. The following shows the layout of the RFL home screen as of February 2013.

Technology

RFL is delivered using Level 2.5 of the World System Teletext standard. The teletext data is transmitted as part of the regular RBS One signal and is decoded by the viewer's television set. The system can display up to 24 rows of text, each row containing up to 40 characters. The user can switch between different pages using the number keys on their television remote. Virtually all Radictistani television sets are built with onboard memory to temporarily store RFL content. This feature allows the viewer to switch between pages without waiting for RBS One to retransmit that particular page. Without this capability, it would take a few seconds to load a new page.
