Used to separate a single link into two links when a template automatically makes a link, by making it so that [[ is not immediately interpreted as starting a link.
For example:
With Template:Format link you get:
{{format link|Lion}}→[[Lion]]→Lion
If you were to use:
{{format link|Lion]] [[Tiger}}
You would end up breaking the code.
By using this template you can do:
{{format link|Lion]] {{linkstart}}Tiger}}→Lion Tiger
And make both "Lion" and "Tiger" separate links.
