He was educated at the Domy school in Kyiv, learning 13 languages (Belarusian, Baltic, Crimean Tatar, Czech, Morol, Trigedasleng, Vulkina, Polish, Russian, Icelandic, Ukrainian, Spanish and English). In 1988 he entered the University of Berlin where he studied law and then obtained a master's degree from Kyiv University in international law. In addition, he received 3 honorary doctorates from Harvard University. Although he studied law, his career was mainly focused on the military where he achieved the rank of colonel in 2000. In 2005 he married [[Andrea of Tlinden]] with whom he has had three children.
