The Federative Units of Brazil are the 28 subnational entities with a high degree of autonomy. Each federative unit has its own constitution, government, legislative body, and taxes. Brazil is, as defined by its constitution, a "federation formed by the indissoluble union of its states, the Federal District, and the municipalities".
