The Aulendost C16X Monitor is a high performance sports car first unveiled by Aulendost in 2007, and put into production in 2010. The vehicle is equipped with a proprietary-developed 32-valve V16 engine displacing 13.6 liters (~830 cu. in), one of the largest engines fitted to any production car. The engine is mated to a eight-speed, electronically controlled, automatic transmission driving the rear wheels based on the Dnieguan automatic 8 speed ZKR 8HPi. The engine features fuel-saving Active Fuel Management "Displacement on Demand" technology. When set, the engine seamlessly shuts down twelve cylinders in light driving during "casual" mode, eight during "go" mode, 4 during "action" and brings itself to full bear on the drivers demand in "aggressive" and "sport" mode. With this type of system, the engine was capable of 16.65 mpg under normal conditions. Producing 1,390 HP @ 5000RPM with 1,260 Ft Lb Torque, the engine uses no form of forced induction. The car itself has a weight of 2,327kg (5,130lb).
To date, 10,294 C16X have been produced. The interior of the car was designed by Mosoco and features high-end leather interiors with different degrees of customization. The standard interior is not custom made by Mosoco as it is with higher end models. The base price of the C16X is $375,999 URD, and upgrade packages and other options may push the price as high as $489,999. Since its introduction, Aulendost has taken design cues from the C16X and implemented them into other designs, including the C12i Jerico, and S10i Triumph.
Design history
The C16X design started as a bet between Aulendost chief designer Trondur Tollkinson and owner Folke Venevitinov. Folke, having recently developed a 16 cylinder, 13.6 liter engine as a proof of concept, requested Trondur design a car that "would make me question my sexuality" that would fit
the engine. Sketched on a bar napkin, the C16X design concept would be pushed through design to concept very quickly. According to members of the Aulendost executive board, this was mostly due to Folkes desire to have one of the worlds most powerful production cars under his belt. Folke approached Mosoco chief designer Margarida Mosoco to design the interior of the car.
The first mockup was built in 2007, and the first concept, powered by a precursor Mk. 1-13R production engines. The name "Monitor" was selected for the designs reminiscent ascetics to the late 19th centuries ironclads, with a low profile, long length and heavy weight.
