Waldrich (Waldish: ᚡᛆᛚᛚᛂᚱᛁᚴᛂ, Vallerike), officially the Waldish Confederation (Waldish: ᚡᛆᛚᛚᛋᚴ᛬ᚠᚮᚱᛒᚢᚿᛑ, Vallsk Forbund), is a sovereign state on the Svallandic island of X in northern Calesia. It lies between the X Ocean to the north, the X Ocean to the east, and the X Sea to the southwest. The nation shares a land border with Valmut to the southeast, and maritime borders with X to the west and Falland to the south. Alsvik is Waldrich's capital and largest city, with other major cities including Hellnafjord, Strandhavn, Kongsheim, and Hovberg. With a population of approximately 63 million and a total area of 648,557 square kilometers, Waldrich is the Xth most populous and Xth largest nation in Teleon.
Humans first settled Waldrich between the 10th and 11th millennia BC, at the end of the last ice age. During the early middle ages, the Waldic tribes inhabiting the region began to organize into several petty kingdoms. In 759, X of the Kingdom of X unified many of these kingdoms under the Waldian Empire, which ruled most of Svalland and northern !Europe at its territorial peak in the 9th century. The empire fragmented in 1031, and control over Waldrich passed to the successor state of North Waldia. The !Reformation of the 16th century divided the realm along religious lines, with the nobles of the southern kingdoms converting to !Protestantism in defiance of the Waldic Catholic Church. Tensions between the !Catholic north and !Protestant south culminated with the X War, resulting in the dissolution of North Waldia in 1584. The southern kingdoms unified under the Kingdom of Valmut, while the northern kingdoms established the Old Waldish Confederacy as a successor to North Waldia. Initially intended as a defensive alliance between independent kingdoms, the Confederacy consolidated into a federal state in 1821 as a consequence of the X War. Waldrich emerged as a great power in !Europe during the mid-19th century under the rule of Foresitter Olaf V, who reformed the armies of the Confederation's constituent states into a unified and modern fighting force. Olaf also oversaw the industrialization of the nation's economy, which was among the wealthiest in the world by the end of his reign in 1860.
Waldrich's loss to Falland in the First Cuthish War of 1866 sent the nation into turmoil, culminating in the Waldish Revolution. Olaf's successor, Karl II, instituted liberalizing reforms in response, resulting in the end of absolutism and the ratification of a democratic constitution. After a half-century long arms race with Falland, war again broke out betweent the two powers in 1919. Waldrich's victory in 1921 caused support for nationalist and revanchist political elements to rise in Falland, allowing national syndicalists to take power in the 1925 elections. The continued spread of national syndicalism worldwide throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s set the stage for the outbreak of the Great War in 1934, which pitted Waldrich and the X Powers against Falland and the Y Powers. The Y Powers surrendered unconditionally in 1940, with Waldrich and its allies occupying Falland.
Contemporary Waldrich is a great power, wielding significant regional and global influence in economic, cultural, diplomatic, and military affairs. It is a founding member of the Nordbund and X Economic Partnership, and holds a permanent seat on the X Security Council. Waldrich is a developed country, with a high income economy that ranks as the Xth largest in the world. Its economic system, known internationally as the Waldish model, combines high economic freedom with a strong social safety net centered around a universal basic income. Waldrich is a recognized nuclear weapons state under the Treaty of Hellnafjord and possesses the Xth largest military in the world, with a blue-water navy that allows it to project power globally.

Waldrich is divided into 17 states (lander), including three kingdoms (kongedømmer), one grand duchy (storhertugdømme), two duchies (hertugdømmer), four jarldoms (jarldømmer), three principalities (fyrstedømmer), three free states (frilander), and one free city (friby). Most Waldish states are under the authority of a lord, although free states and the free city of Alsvik have no local monarch and are directly under the authority of the Foresitter. Under the Federal Constitution, all Waldish states reserve a substantial degree of sovereignty within their own borders, with state constitutions and legislatures governing most internal affairs.
While most states are granted an equal degree of sovereignty under the law, free states hold special constitutional privileges that exempt them from certain federal laws. These privileges are not uniform, and each of the three free states have varying degrees of autonomy due to a number of historical, political, and cultural factors. For example, neither Eldsey nor Cuthland use Waldish as their official language, instead using Eldseyan and Cuthish respectively for government business. Cuthland is also granted specific exceptions to certain federal trade regulations, allowing it to trade freely with Falland due to shared cultural and historical ties. Coshaqua reserves the greatest degree of autonomy due to its geographic proximity to mainland Elia Boreal, and is self-governing on most matters not related to national security.
