The Pervincian Civil War was an armed conflict which brought about the end of the First Pervincian Republic. It began on the
Background
After the skirmishes and conflicts related to the consolidation of the Pervincian Republic and disputes over who would take the role of King, Pervincia remained in a state of political instability.
Course of War
Assassination
The Pervincian Civil War began with that assassination of King Karvel Valgarðsson by a Communist named Brjánn Borisson. The man was a member of the Sacenbridge based socialist group the Red Pervincia Movement which had formed after the collapse and forceful takeover of the Sacenbridge Commune. The assassination itself consisted of a bomb being detonated in a building where the King was attending a dinner. Immediately after the detonation a man walked up to where the King had taken shelter before pulling out a pistol and firing 3 shots into his chest.
Initial Fighting
Candor
Reactionary militias angered by the assassination began attempting to capture or kill suspected socialists throughout the country and took control of the regional government of Candor before launching a march north towards the city of Silverlight. In response to the march on Silverlight locals and socialists organized into military formations to block and defeat it. These groups would succeed in halting the reactionary advance and begin the slow process of pushing them back the first pitched battles of the civil war.
Later, the reactionaries of Candor were converted into a warlord state under Max Eragonsson and the advance on Silverlight was eventually forced into the sea by the fighters under the Silverlight government.
Lepus War
Ethnonationalist groups escalated their attacks on Supero Omnian civilians who now began to arm and organize themselves in response. This fighting would continue throughout the winter and would end up with Supero Omnian militias in control of the city of Port Lepus and surrounding areas and South Sacenbridge. Fighting around Lepus continued until forces loyal under Guðjón Pétursson restored order to the area in late 1963. The militias which had formed to defend Port Lepus from the nationalists and the socialists decided to disband or join with Guðjón Pétursson, remembering his protection and treatment of Supero Omnian civilians during the Pervincian Independence War.
Conflict Escalation
Coup Attempt
A dispute over the state of the monarchy between republicans and Valgarðists who supported the nephew of the previous king came to a head when nephew Hafberg Valgarð led a march on the Government District in the capital and called on his supporters to prepare to fight against the presumed response by the government. His actions during the independence war earned him support throughout Tantum and the mountainous peninsula south of it on the Pervincian main island, both of which were areas his father's forces had operated in.
The governmental response was sporadic and divided. The police force of Pervincia City put up a fight but were overwhelmed by armed rioters and royalist militia. The pocket of forces holding out in the Capital District mostly collapsed after 3 days of fighting, but managed to help many members of the Pervincian Assembly to flee to Silverlight where they created an emergency government.
Guðjón Pétursson had set out from his home in Giofel immediately after the coup attempt began. Upon his arrival he found military forces outside of the city confused and disorganized and was able to unite them behind them and march them into the city. Royalist crowds dispersed without much force being needed and the city’s locals welcomed the military forces restoration of order and the new security allowed many remaining Assembly members to flee the city to Silverlight as well.
The government in Silverlight denounced Guðjón Pétursson’s government as an illegitimate military junta and themselves as the legitimate government, adopting the anti-reactionary militias as their main force of fighters along with whatever conventional military forces joined with them. The royalists of Hafberg Valgarð called for the formation of a Northern Coalition to restore him to his position as monarch while consolidating themselves in their secure territory. The government under Guðjón Pétursson was very popular with Independence War veterans and members of the military, who began to join with him in large numbers which only increased when he began putting down the ethnonationalist militias and restoring order to the region around lake Giofel.
Northern Coalition
While the council which formed to discuss the creation of a Northern Coalition was called by Hafberg Valgarð, it ended up not voting in his favour. The Northern Coalition was created as a defensive force, but was immediately attacked by the Royalists and the Federalists in Egsnart. It would collapse in the first months of the Civil War, although many or its members voted willingly to join with Egsnart.
Sacenbridge
Socialists managed to restore the Sacenbridge Commune in the Sacen river valley and many began advancing towards Port Lepus, fighting the Ethnonationalists there. The advance would be put down by Guðjón Pétursson who then continued into the Sacenbridge Commune itself.
The region of South Sacenbridge, an area populated heavily by Supero Omnians, also had many defensive militias form. The largest of these groups spearheaded the creation of a joint defensive council of militia leaders and any other important figures in the area. A man named placeholder, an Independence War veteran who had led a paramilitary during the peaceful period and had several family members in important positions, overthrew this council and became the warlord of South Sacenbridge. Family members who had been in the Pervincian and Supero Omnian Colonial intelligence services helped provide him security and contacts abroad while his own forces allowed enforcement of smaller groups. This warlord state lasted over a year until a group of young officers in a converted military unit overthrew and executed him before surrendering South Sacenbridge to Guðjón Pétursson.
After Guðjón Pétursson’s forces landed in Sacenbridge they advanced towards the central river valley. To minimal resistance they captured the town of nordesian town name and severed the Commune in half. Over the following winter the southern portion, in the mountains and upper river, collapsed and surrendered to him. The portion in the city of Sacenbridge itself required a battle in the city before it too surrendered.
End of War
Royalist Collapse
After the emergency government in Silverlight reorganized itself into the Pervincian Democratic Front, commonly called the Silverlight Democratic Front, it’s forces turned their attention to the main Royalist force in the north and to skirmishes with the forces of Guðjón Pétursson in the mountains. Federalist forces moved into Tantumfjord and successfully took control of the city itself which forced Hafberg Valgarð to abandon his forces in the south to rally a defense, this caused both fronts to collapse rapidly. By the winter the Royalist army had completely fallen apart.
In the next spring Guðjón Pétursson’s forces made a successful landing on the west island of Tantum and advanced inward. They faced minimal resistance and were able to continue to advance until they reached Valgarð’s seat where he attempted to make a last stand but is captured alive and imprisoned for the rest of the war.
Federalist Collapse
Guðjón Pétursson’s forces crossed into east Tantum February of the next year, Federalist forces had been concentrated to protect the island of Tantumfjord and its much larger city which left Karlston largely undefended. Karlston was captured easily, but the speed they were forced to use to beat the winter and the incoming Federalist reinforcements meant that guerrilla fighters were able to avoid being defeated and continue fighting his forces.
Guðjón Pétursson next launched attacks north, taking all the large towns but again not able to prevent guerrillas from harassing his forces. Those same forces then swept south and were able to land some elite forces near the city of Egsnart. The fighting for the city was lengthy and close, but it managed to force Egsnart’s naval forces to flee south which allowed further forces to land on Egsnart. This eventually led to the successful capture of the city.
Pervincian Democratic Front Expansion
The Federalists eventually fully joined with the Pervincian Democratic Front. This united front allowed for stronger defensive positions and support of guerilla forces active throughout Pervincia. The combination of the high cost required to capture the remainder of non-Pétursson controlled territory and the large amount of forces stretched attempting to suppress guerrillas allowed the Democratic Front to begin negotiating with Pètursson’s government and negotiate to bring the conflict to an end.
