The President of the United States serves for a single term of five years, and cannot run again. To run for President, you are required to have been a citizen for at least 10 years, be present in the nation for the previous five years and not have a criminal record. Many individuals after having been president move to other positions in government such as being a member of the cabinet, leading a federal agency or even being somebody's Vice President. Vice Presidents unlike Presidents have no term limits, and serve for the same amount of time of five years.

Originally when the Constitution was ratified, presidents served for three years and there were no term limits. This was fine until the late 1800's when a southerner was so popular that they ran for six terms consecutively, and when they announced their intention to run for a seventh, Congress moved to form a bipartisan committee to pass the 16th Amendment, which extended terms to five years and limited individuals to only running for a single term.
