Lothia, officially the High Order of Lothia (Lothic: Altus Ordo Lothia), is a large nation situated on the continent of Western Hiakemira in Esvanovia. It shares a land border with the nations of Salbert to the east, Mahdah and Garza to the west and the Inner Sea to the north. The country is governed by an absolute, non-hereditary monarchy headed by the Imperator, who is chosen from among seven houses in gladiatorial combat. The Imperator serves as head of government and state respectively, though he does receive council from the national legislature, the Senatus. The Imperator has veto power over the Senatus that cannot be overriden, though he is very amenable to the advice of his Court, who provide insights to the Imperator.
Early Cirazur explorers discovered the land now known as Lothia around 6000 BCE, creating waystations along their way north towards the Inner Sea. Large longhships became temporary structures in the land, which became colonized by expats several decades later. Early clans would form villages that would become great cities in Lothia, like Carodelphia, Canatha, and Tergeste. The name Lothia derives from the ancient Cirazur word for "land of forests". The inward migration into the fertile lands of Lothia would produce city-states that would exchange commerce and culture. Over time, the city-states began to be absorbed by Tergeste, a large city on the shores of Lake Mela, into a Republic. The age of the Lothic Republic would last for almost 2,500 years; by the late Republican era, corruption and public apathy led to a coup by General Marcus Sextus Agrippa, forming the basis of the Imperial era, or the High Order. Agrippa would order his seven best subordinates to fight for the right to succeed him, setting the precedent for succession in Lothia and forming the Seven Houses of Lothia. The High Order would see its influence spread over the coming centuries, though it saw a major defeat during the Great War (Esvanovia).
Modern Lothia remains influential in Hiakemira and abroad in Esvanovia, with a large population of over 650 million and a GDP (nominal) of over $20 Trillion USD. The country has a low infant mortality rate, a reasonably high standard of living per capita, and a high literacy rate. However, political corruption and malfeasance remain problems according to international watchdog organizations, and the country has a widening wealth gap between the upper elites of society and the rest of society. It's burgeoning rearmament program has also alarmed regional observers.
