Federal elections were held in Tarper on 24 September 2017 to elect the members of the 5th Bundestag. At stake were all 709 seats in the Federal Assembly.
The Socialist Party (SP), led by Chancellor Maximillian Herzog, won the highest percentage of the vote with 33%. The Christian Democrats (CDSF) achieved its best result since the start of the Federal Republic with 21% of the vote. The Green Liberation Union (GLU/ULV) became the third party in the Federal Assembly with 12.6% of the vote, whilst the Communists (CPT) won 10.7% of the vote becoming the fourth largest party, its worst result in the Federal Republic. It was the first time since 1990 that a liberal and conservative party gained seats in the Federal Assembly.
For the second consecutive occasion, the green and communist parties reached a coalition agreement with the ruling party to form a government. The new government took office on 14 March 2018.
