Algaculture plays a vital role in the Blackhelm Confederacy, and provides an important source of food for large portions of the population. Additionally, the presence of algae farms on highway overpasses also helps to decreases the amount of smog and general air pollution typically found in congested cities.

Algae farms are typically established by local churches and used to feed the hungry within the parish. These farms are often nothing more than simple glass tubes filled with water, and a kind of filtration system which pulls in CO2 from the air and puts out clean oxygen exhaled from the plants themselves. After harvesting, the algae can be given out to the population in a variety of ways. Typically, the algae will be dried at the local church and then condensed into a pill, which can then be easily distributed to the population. Others will create a kind of algae cake, or even a broth, that can be consumed.
