Known as the 'Red Marshal', Kurusatienkit returned from exile to lead a military coup against the government of Prince Kanisorn. His military government oversaw Kuthina's transition from an absolute to constitutional monarchy. He founded the People's Rally, a social democratic pro-conciliation party focused on land and political reform. After winning elections in 1963 and 1968, he was removed from power in 1972 by the military.
