The territory of Idel-Ural has historically been inhabited by nomadic groups and empires. In antiquity, the nomadic Scythians inhabited the land. Turkic and Fino-Ugric nomads, as well as Eastern Slavs have inhabited the country, forming {{wp|Volga Bulgaria}}. In the 13th century, Volga Bulgaria was subjugated by the {{wp|Mongol Empire}} under Genghis Khan, then the {{wp|Golden Horde}} which split off to form the {{wp|Khanate of Kazan}} that would later be conquerd by the {{wp|Tsardom of Russia}} in 1557. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, and subsequent civil war, the territory of Idel-Ural was reorganised several times. In 1936, it was made the [[Volga-Ural Soviet Federative Socialist Republic]], part of the Soviet Union.
 
Idel-Ural, alongside Nogaistan, are consider "the bridge between east and west" due to their close proximity to Asia. Orthodox Christianity is the most popular religion due to Russian imperialism, though most people (mostly ethnic Tatars) are atheists and Islam is still practiced by a notable minority. Idel-Ural is a member of the United Nations (UN), WTO, CIS, the Eurasian Economic Union, CSTO, OSCE, OIC, CCTS, the Turkic Council and TURKSOY.
