Pashtunistan (Pashto:پښتونستان, Pax̌tūnstān), officially the Islamic Emirate of Pashtunistan (د پښتونستان اسلامي امارت, Da Pax̌tūnstān Islāmī Jomhoriyat), is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia. It borders Pakistan to the east, Balochistan to the south, Iran to the west, Hazaristan to the north and Tajikistan to the northeast. Pashtunistan is landlocked and mountainous; its landscape is composed of dry mountains and basins, rivers flowing in narrow canyons, and some desert areas.

By 1996 most of Afghanistan was captured by the Islamic fundamentalist group, the Taliban, who ruled most of the country as a totalitarian regime for five years. The Taliban were removed from power after the US invasion in 2001 but still controlled a significant portion of the country. The ten-year-long war between the government and the Taliban reached a conclusion with the 2007 Taliban offensive and the resulting fall of Kabul which returned the Taliban to power. the partition of Afghansistan with the formation of two new states, The republic of Hazaristan and the Taliban-dominated Pashtunistan, with northern Afghanistan divided between Uzbekistan, Balochistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Pamiristan.
