The Battles at Anoss, often referred to as the Killing Fields of Anoss, was a series of massive-scale battles fought in the Anoss Region of Freeman during the Asterian Civil War, resulting in the deaths of over 600,000 men on both sides, and known for being the single deadliest battle in Asterian history. It is infamous for the sheer loss of life, the widespread destruction, and for the slaughter of 36,000 civilians at the hands of the Separatists. The battle revolutionized warfare with the implementation of tanks and submachine guns in combat. The war of attrition fought at Anoss utterly crippled the Separatist Army and forced it into retreat, leading to the liberation of Freeman in early 1910.
Today, the Anoss Region has been designated by the Federal Government as the "Anoss Dead Zone", and has been sealed off. 294 square miles where the battles took place are under strict quarantine by State and Federal authorities, as it was deemed to be physically and environmentally too damaged by the conflict for human habitation.
Geography and Background
Located in southeastern Freeman, and Anoss Region is comprised mainly of the Anoss Forest, though there are a number of clearings and plains that were utilized by civilians for farming purposes. Route 71, constructed between 1899 and 1902, ran along the southern border and served as the only major route of travel through the region, with all major towns being less than ten miles off the route. In the southern parts of the Anoss, swamplands form during the summer months due to the heavy rainfall and humidity in the region, though the northern parts tended to stay drier. As of 1905, the Anoss Region was home to some 356,000 people-- 210,000 of which lived in Annopolis, which Route 71 ran straight through.
Until 1908, the Anoss Region had been spared most of the effects of the war-- only experiencing Separatist troops travelling down Route 71 and stopping in Annopolis during frontline rotations. The Federalist counter-offensive of 1908 had pushed the front further east, and while Separatist forces were able to halt the advance in the Anoss woodlands, it brought the brunt of the conflict to the region. Federalist military leaders figured that if they could take control of the region, they could use Route 71 to drive in Centralia under the cover of the dense woodlands. The CIS knew this, and deployed hundreds of thousands of men to defend it. By early August, the Federalists had amassed nearly a million soldiers in the Anoss, with the Separatists close behind at almost 775,000.
