Franclinton-on-Sea (/ˈfræŋklɪntən/ FRANG-klin-tən), officially the City of Franclinton-on-Sea and often simply referred to as Franclinton, is the provincial capital of the province of Henria. It is the largest city in Henria, and the second-largest city in Insulamia, with a population of 1,618,545 as of the last census in 2020. It was the de jure capital city of Insulamia from Federation until 2021, when this title was transferred to Whitecastle. However, as the transition process between the cities is still ongoing, Franclinton is still viewed as the de facto capital city of the nation, hosting most of the nation's diplomatic embassies and many federal government buildings. Franclinton is located in the shire of Franclintonshire in the south of Insulamia, on the coast of the Channel of Glass. Residents of the city are officially named "Franclintonians", however the colloquial names of "Francliner" and "Franclintonite" are far more commonly used.

Archaeological findings suggest that the area around what is now Franclinton had been inhabited by Arctic peoples since at least 3,800 years ago, but these peoples are believed to have only lived there for brief periods. The Inuit peoples of Insulamia have inhabited the region since the 13th century. Captain Francis Clinton, the namesake of the city, and his crew discovered the site on the Premiervoyage in 1501 for the Kingdom of England. The City of Franclinton-on-Sea was founded a year later in 1502 by English settlers, becoming the second European settlement on the island.

Franclinton is a multicultural city, with 51% of its population being first-or-second-generation immigrants. It is consistently ranked among the most liveable cities in the world while also among the cheapest cities to live in in the developed world. The city is a centre for research, education, and the arts in Insulamia, with strengths in medicine, theatre, and music. It is home to the Riddlepark, the home grounds of the Insulamia national football team, and several of the world's leading universities, including the Royal Insulamian University in Franclinton. Franclinton has hosted several major international events, including the 1969 World Expo and the 1986 Commonwealth Games, as well as hosting portions of the 1999 Rugby World Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Name

The name "Franclinton" comes from a portmanteau of the forename and surname of Captain Francis Clinton, who commanded the Premiervoyage which first landed in the Bay of Franclinton. It was initially named "Henrytown", after King Henry VI, but it was later renamed in honour of Clinton. Records from the 16th century have several names for the city derived from Clinton's name, including "Francistown", "Clinton", and "Alexandria". By the mid-17th century, however, a general consensus was reached on the name "Franclinton", with its first recorded use dating back to 1510.
