Construction began in March 1977, were halted from May 16 1977 to May 31 1977 due to political instability issues, then finished on April 14 1982, the official date of Dar Al Hamma's metro opening. The metro spanned from Our Lady of Thrismari Station at the western end and Martyrs Station at the eastern end. The metro line 1 was extended to East Promenade Station on May 5 1989, and the extension also included the El Djanane Station. Another extension, a much bigger one, was inaugurated on October 22 2004, featuring Dharma Station, Falaa Square Station and Stadium-Berkani Station. The 1st line wasn't extended since.

Dar Al Hamma metro has one ghost station, located on the line 1. It is between the Dar Al Hamma railstation and the Martyrs station. The ghost station, named "Martyrs Park", was on the original path of the line 1. However, in early July 1994, the platforms sinked slightly in the ground, making the station dangerous for public usage. The stop was closed on September 4 1994. The station is visible when travelling on the metro, and is sometimes used by firefighters for training.
