The Conservative Party (Mespalian Conservatœ̂ricquinen pârti, French: Parti conservateur) is a conservative political party in Mespalia.
The party was founded soon after Mespalia gained independence from Ainin in 1807. Initially it was a rather loose organization of like-minded individuals with non-existent central organization. Supporting monarchism, interests of the landed gentry and the aristocracy and opposing democracy and free trade, it was mostly supported by the wealthy Aininian minority. Its main opposition was the Liberal Party, a classical liberal and egalitarian party. The two parties dominated Mespalian politics until the early 20th century.
Today the Conservative Party retains its conservative and monarchist character, although its opposition to democracy has all but disappeared. Although still supported by the wealthy Aininian aristocracy, it has found new supporters in the new native Mespalian noble families who were ennobled in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as in business owners and white-collar workers.
Economically the party has all but abandoned its former support for protectionism and tariffs and instead embraced free markets. Socially the party is mostly conservative, although there is a small but vocal liberal faction within the party. Conservative Students, the student wing of the party, is known for championing more liberal views, while the Conservative Youth League has voiced more radical, neo-traditionalist and anti-egalitarian views. Similar factions also exist within the party itself.
