2023-24 AFLP Championship |
The AFLP Championship, Aquitaynian Football League Pyramid Championship, known simply as the Championship, is the second-highest division of the Aquitaynian football league system, after the Premier League, and is contested by 20 clubs.
Each season, the two top finishing teams in the Championship are automatically promoted to the Premier League. The teams that finish 3rd through 6th are entered into a playoff tournament, with the winner also gaining promotion to the Premier League. The three lowest finishing clubs in the Championship are relegated to the AFLP Prestige Divison.
League structure
The league comprises 20 teams. Over the course of a season, which runs from August to the following May, each team plays twice against the others in the league, once at home and once away, resulting in a total of 38 matches total. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The teamsa are ranked in the league table by points gained, then goal difference, then goals scored, and then their head-to-head record for that season. At the end of the season, the top two teams in the league table and the winner of the Championship playoffs are promoted to the Premier LEague and the bottom three teams are relegated to the AFPL Prestige Division. The AFPL Championship playoffs is a knock-out competition for the teams finishing the season in 3rd to 6th place. The third-place team plays the sixth place team, and the fourth place team plays the fifth place team in a two-legged semi-finals (home and away). The winners of each semi-final then play a single final match at a neutral stadium with the winner being promoted to the Premier League and being awarded the AFPL Championship playoff trophy.
