Toppvärman, (The Top Vermish), is a Vermish professional league for association football clubs. At the top of the Vermish football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Vermish First Division.
Including the 2024 season, Toppvärman has been running for an unbroken streak of 105 seasons.
History
The first attempts at an organized football league in Vermrike was made in the mid 1890s, when competitions were organized in Hovsborg and Bräteborg respectively. These were relatively short-lived though and it was not until 1899 that a more standardized competition was formed. This league was named the Vermish Championship and was played in a cup format to decide the national champions. All games were often played in either Hovsborg or Bräteborg, which is why for many years only teams from these cities participated.
Competition format
Since 1991 there are 16 clubs in Toppvärman. During the course of a season (starting in late March and ending in early November) each club plays the others twice (home and away) for a total of 30 games. The two lowest placed teams at the end of the season are relegated to Division 1 and the top two teams from Division 1 are promoted in their place.
