From Middle Menapian oras, from Old Menapian awras, aras, awrat, arat, from Primitive Menapian awerant ("confluence"), from Proto-Bythonic abrant ("eyelid"), from Proto-Celtic *abrants. Cognate with Welsh amrant ("eyelid"), Breton abrant ("eyelid"), Cornish abrans ("eyebrow"), Irish fabhra ("eyelash; eyebrow; fringe - when in the plural"), Scottish Gaelic abhra ("eyelash; eyebrow"), and Manx ferroogh ("eyelid; eyebrow").
