Naming laws

There are various laws concerning names in Yogania. A newborn child has to be named within a week of it´s birth or the parents will face a 100€ (106$) fine. They can either pick from a list of 4500 Yoganian names or choose a name themselves. If the go for the latter options they will have to get the name approved and follow these rules: The name has to be at least 3 letters long, and it should not be inappropriate or detrimental to the well-being of the child. It should only contain letters available in the Yoganian alphabet (exception for foreign-born children).

It is not uncommon for Yoganian children to have multiple given names. The first one is usually the one for daily use. In 2014, 30% of Yoganian newborns were given only one name, 49% two names, 18% three names and 3% four names or more. A lot of Yoganian people shorten their names or use a nickname, for example Jack for Jakob, Hal for Halgor or Halthar, Yod for Yodolyd, Jog, Jock or Joki for Jokhal. Names usually are gender specific but there are some unisex names (e.g. Thumin (more feminine than masculine), Halthar (completely unisex).
