The main Imperial field army under the Viscount Richmond marched up from West Oakcliffe, intent on securing a swift end to the war by taking several important ports on the Balionic northern coast. New Tevetdale, the principal port of the State of New Ballaeter was the first to be reached and came under assault by Richmond's Imperial army of 100,000 troops on 19th April 1872. The Union garrison, consisting of regular Union Army troops alongside militia and naval personnel, resisted Imperial attacks for five hours before eventually being forced to surrender due to casualties and lack of ammunition. New Tevetdale then became the main Imperial base of supply for the rest of the 1872 campaign.

The opening engagement of the 1872 Lareno Campaign, the battle actually took place in the neighbouring state of New Ballaeter.
