The Conservative Party of Pharexia (Pharexian: stéttarfélags til verndarhyggju), is the major party of the Pharexian centre-right, and the leading party in both of the federal legislative houses. It was established as the merger of the Liberal Democrats and the Ilyçisian Unity Party in 1961. The party self identifies as a conservative party of progress, and holds economic and social politics that align with standard conservative and Ilyçisian principles.

A coalition of the Conservative Party, the Science–Moderate Party, and New Future entered office in 2018 based on promises of tax cuts, better public services and stricter rules on immigration, with the informal support of the Ilyçisian Democrats.

The party advocates economic liberalism, reduction of taxes, and individual rights, and defines itself as a "conservative party of progress". The party generally supports semi-privatization through state-funded private services and tougher law and order measures.

There have been in total 17 Conservative members of the Federal Council, the most from any one political party. It currently has 2 members, one of which is Head Councilor. As of 2019, the Conservatives leads the governmental coalition in both houses of the Síðari.

History

Political Positions

Economics

Conservatives have said they believe that free markets and individual achievement are the primary factors behind economic prosperity. To this end, they advocate in favor of laissez-faire economics and fiscal conservatism. The party does, however, believe that there should be a strong "safety net" to assist the less fortunate and support maintaining the welfare state. The party opposes increasing in the national minimum wage but "respects each ward's right to increase [it]". They support the current single-payer government-run healthcare scheme but advocate for increased privatization in certain sectors.

Wards' Rights

Ideologically, the Conservatie Party typically supports a smaller federal government. Historically, this has translated into keeping power in the hands of ward executive councils and legislatures to handle taxes, regulations on marriage, and mapping of voting districts.

Social Policies

The Conservatives, like many parties in Pharexia, are difficult to classify as either liberal or conservative on social policies. While advocate for laws that uphold Ilyçisian values, such as opposition to abortion and marijuana, they are strong supporters of LGBT rights and gun control.

Abortion

Most Conservatives identify as pro-life and oppose abortion on religious and/or moral grounds. However, most hold exceptions in the case of the mother's life being at risk. When the Ward Assembly voted on the 2019 Right to Life Act, fifteen of the eighteen Conservative members supported it. A recent poll found the majority of party members oppose elective abortion.

Family

The party strongly promotes itself as a pro-family party and encourage married couples to have more children. Legislation sponsored by Conservatives passed in 2018 to build 1,000 inexpensive housing units as a way to help young couples start a family, as well as lengthening maternity/paternity leave.

LGBT

Most Conservatives supported the legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption in Pharexia.

Guns

Conservatives generally support maintaining the status quo on gun ownership rights and oppose further regulations on handguns for personal protection. Pharexia already has very strict gun rights.
