The Aurora Islands (Lanish: Taivhaanvalkkeesaaret, Jartlandic: Nordlysøyer, Hilyic: Revontulisaaret, Davonian: Guovssahasasaidsullot), sometimes referred to as the Auroran Islands, is an autonoumous region within the Kingdom of Tavostia. It is an archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean as well as the northernmost inhabited area in the world. The Auroran Islands is the only region in Tavostia to have Jartlandic as an official language alongside Lanish, Davonian and Hilyic that was introduced in 1911.
The Aurora Islands were first inhabited by the Davonic peoples until the arrival of Lhedwinic settlers in the late 800s. It was formed into the Grand Duchy of the Aurora Islands in 1035 and later was made a part of the Kingdom of Damberland in 1128. The Aurora Islands would see continuous change as it was passed from kingdom to kingdom; during this period from 1128 to 1325 the islands would experience a steady wave of Jartlandic immigration. Following the North Seas War in 1678, the islands were made a part of the Kingdom of Ackermark. In the 18th century, the islands experienced a steady wave of Hilyic immigration which led to the creation of a distinct Lanish language and identity. Following the fall of the Lhedwinic Empire, the Aroran Islands were purchased by the Kingdom of Tavostia in 1921 from the Kingdom of Ackermark. It was granted home rule on 29 May 1951.
