The Royal Navy (RN) is the maritime warfare branch of His Majesty’s Armed Forces, and the principal component of His Majesty’s Naval Service, a constituent part of the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Apilonia. The Royal Navy maintains a large fleet of sophisticated warships, submarines, and aircraft, including ten aircraft carriers, four guided missile battleships, TBC amphibious warfare vessels and dozens of cruisers, escorts, and patrol vessels. In addition to the commissioned warships of the Royal Navy, the fleet is also augmented by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, a substantial force multiplier that supports and replenishes the fleet at sea all over the globe. The professional head of the Royal Navy, and the broader naval service, is the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, an Admiral and member of the Defence Council, whilst wider management of the Naval Service is managed by the Board of Admiralty, which is made up of the various Sea Lords and various other offices and divisions under them which make up a structure collectively known as the Admiralty.

The Royal Navy has always enjoyed a prominent position within the Kingdom, being formed shortly after the Kingdom’s founding to protect the rapidly developing Merchant Navy, given that the trade links back to Europe formed a critical part of the fledgling state’s economy. The early role as a force primarily concerned with commerce protection culminated in the Battle of the Gulf in 1672 in which HMS Vigilant, under the command of Captain Sir Edward Covington famously fought off a far superior enemy force to protect Apilonian merchantmen and setting a lasting tradition. Ever since, the Royal Navy has consistently enjoyed a substantial budget throughout most of its existence, due to the prominent position in the mindset of the Apilonian people, and was consistently one of the largest and most powerful navy, with particular predominance in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including associated waters. As such, due to its historical and lasting prominence it is common to refer to it as ‘the Royal Navy’ without qualification.

With an active-duty strength of 462,700 officers and ratings, and a reserve component of 55,300 officers and ratings, with an additional 111,400 officer and ratings making up the individual ready reserve, liable to call-up in times of war. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary has an active-duty strength of 25,620 officers and ratings.

Fleet Operations Command

Home Fleet

Pacific Fleet

The Pacific Fleet is, without a doubt, the most prestigious and most important seagoing commands in the Royal Navy, due to the absolute premium placed by the Admiralty on ensuring Apilonian naval dominance of the Pacific.

The Flag Officer, Eastern Pacific, is responsible for approximately fifty million square miles of the eastern and northern Pacific Ocean, including the Bering Sea, Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and a sector of the Arctic. The major oil and trade sea lanes of communication within this area are vitally important to the economic health of the Kingdom, and the Flag Officer, Eastern Pacific, is charged with ensuring an ubiquitous Apilonian naval presence across this region to fulfil a conflict deterrence mission, as well as to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations at sea. In general, the Flag Officer, Eastern Pacific.

The Flag Officer, Western Pacific, is responsible for the many millions of square miles of the western and southern Pacific Ocean, including New Zealand, the Philippine Sea, and associated waters. Although the Kingdom has less direct interests in this part of the Pacific, the Admiralty is still eager to ensure a major Apilonian naval presence across the region, and as such the Flag Officer, Western Pacific, is charged with achieving this. In general, the Flag Officer, Western Pacific, will have between fifty and sixty warships as an establishment, including at least one aircraft carrier battle group.

Atlantic Fleet

The Atlantic Fleet is an operational command of the Royal Navy, responsible for the Atlantic Ocean, and all of its associated seas and waterways. Although the Atlantic Fleet has an area of responsibility for millions of square miles, and as such is split into two subordinate commands, the Admiralty has come to the determination that it is more practical to accept Layartebian dominance of the Atlantic Ocean, in favour of concentrating resources in the Pacific where the Kingdom not only has far more interests but is much better situated to ensure its own dominance. Nevertheless, as the Atlantic Fleet is responsible for protecting the sea lanes of communication in the theatre, both Flag Officer, North Atlantic, based out of TBC, and Flag Officer, South Atlantic, based out of HM Dockyard Simonstown, have small peacetime establishments of one cruiser, two older (Type-43) destroyers, two frigates, and two fleet submarines apiece.

Mediterranean Fleet

The Mediterranean Fleet is a major operational command of the Royal Navy, responsible for the Mediterranean Sea, and all of its associated seas and waterways, the second most prestigious seagoing command after the Pacific Fleet due to the fact that it defends the vital sea lanes of communication and trade between the various coasts of the Kingdom, its colonies, and its allies and other trade partners. The Mediterranean Fleet maintains a retively small peacetime establishment, although it is a common deployment area for at least one carrier battle group, primarily due to the presence of allied (and now Commonwealth) fleets in the theatre, with a heavy focus on patrol vessels and mine hunters, as well as a sizeable establishment of diesel-electric attack submarines. Usually, one warship from the Fleet will be assigned as the Malta Guardship, typically a frigate.

Eastern Fleet

The Eastern Fleet is a major operational command of the Royal Navy, responsible for the Indian Ocean, and all of it’s associated seas and waterways. It is the third most prestigious seagoing command after the Pacific Fleet and the Mediterranean Fleet, due to the fact that it defends the vital sea lanes of communication and trade between the various coasts of the Kingdom, and its colonies and other trade partners in the region. The Eastern Fleet maintains a relatively small peacetime establishment, although it is a common deployment area for at least one carrier battlegroup, primarily due to the presence of allied (and now Commonwealth) fleets in the theatre. Due to the size of the theatre, and the different demands of the different areas, the Fleet is split into two subordinate regional commanders; the Flag Officer, Persian Gulf, and the Flag Officer, Indian Ocean.
