The Mórrígan-class battleship is a class of guided-missile battleships, built for and serving with the Royal Ossorian Navy (RON) starting in 1994. The class was the first class of guided-missile battleship built by the RON and the first Ossorian battleship class to eliminate the large-caliber gun as its primary armament.

Design

General characteristics

The Mórrígan-class ships have an overall length of 243 m, a beam of 28 m, and a draught of 9 m. Each of the class' four steam turbines drive a single 5-bladed Variable-pitch propellers and are powered by a pair of LFTRs and are rated at 198,000 shaft horsepower. This gives ships of the class a reported speed in excess of 30 knots.

Sensors

The Mórrígan-class ships were equipped with the Ráth Combat System, which consisted of the Type 30 air search radar, the Type 31 surface search radar, and the Type 32 fire control radar. The ships are also equipped with a hull-mounted sonar system.

Armament

• Two 115 mm/55 calibre guns for use against surface, airborne, and shore targets, mounted one fore and one aft.
• Eight 30 mm close-in weapon systems for use against close-in surface and airborne targets, mounted around the superstructure.
• Three twin-armed guided missile launchers capable of launching a variety of surface-to-air missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, and anti-submarine missiles with sub-deck magazines capable of carrying 64 missiles each. Removed and replaced in a refit during the 1990s.
  • Refit: Two batteries of vertical missile launchers totaling 192 cells capable of launching a variety of surface-to-air missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, and anti-submarine missiles for use against standoff-range airborne, surface, and subsurface targets, with one battery of 128 cells mounted on the foredeck and a second battery of 64 cells mounted on the afterdeck.
• Two quad-canister anti-ship missile launchers for use against standoff-range surface targets, mounted aft of the superstructure and trained outward of either beam.

Aviation

The Mórrígan-class ships are outfitted with a helicopter hangar and a flight deck on the stern and are capable of operating two helicopters. The ships are additionally outfitted with the launch and retrieval system for a set of five reconnaissance UAVs.
