Asetia , officially the Republic of Asetia is a sovereign, unitary, directorial republic located in X. Covering an area of approximately X square kilometers, the nation is the Nth largest in X by area. From clockwise, the nation borders X and Y. Additionally, Asetia shares maritime borders with X.
[History]
Asetia was granted independence from somebody on 11 September, 1952, following a 6 year provisional period as a colonial mandate to help transition the nation to independent rule. The years of the First Republic was marred by corruption and was viewed as beholden to Euclean interests as many former colonial administrators still held considerable power and influence in the nation. This resulted in a broadly nativist, anti-colonial driven revolution to erupt in the Spring of 1961, and quickly evolved into a civil war. A broad left-leaning coalition of political groups emerged victorious in 1965, and the Second Republic was declared on 2 June, 1965. The initial years of the Second Republic saw strife between the victorious factions, resulting in a series of coups that led to the creation of an authoritarian regime under the control of Kirakosyan Hovasap. Under Krakosyan, elections were suspended and sweeping reforms aimed at wealth inequality, workers' self-management, and property ownership were passed. Authoritarian measures were taken to ensure that these laws and policies passed and were enforced without issue. The ratification and adoption of the current constitution in 2006 saw these reforms become permanent, effectively making Asetia a socialist republic, although the nation itself does not identify as such.
Politically, the nation is officially a unitary directorial republic. The National Convention, the nation's legislature, enjoys legislative supremacy as the primary representative of the people, from whom sovereign power is derived. The 7-member Directory acts as the collective head of state and of government and is chosen for 4 year terms by the National Convention. While the entire directory is responsible for the running of the state, each member oversees one of several of executive departments. The Premier of the Directory is the head of the directory, and is elected by the directory itself. Unlike other nations, the Premier of the Directory is not the head of state nor head of government, with the role being for administrative purposes as the premier chairs meetings of the directory. Likewise, the position of state secretary is purely technocratic in its nature, and is also appointed by the National Convention. Since the reestablishment of elections in 2006, several political parties exist and stand for election, however, the nation's largest party, the Republican League Forward, has remained the nation's ruling party since the declaration of the Second Republic in 1965.
Etymology
Exonym: Old Persian/Parthian āzāta (𐎠𐏀𐎠𐎫) "free, independent" > Middle Persian āzād (ʾcʾt') "noble, free" > āzādestān (ʾcʾt' stʾn') "free/independent country" reference to the island never being fully under the Satrian empires. Trade between Arasanids and Solarians gave rise to Latin "Asetania." Post-colonial and post-revolution revert from the "colonial" Asetania to "Asetia."
Endonym: Sanskrit केसरईय (késarīya) adj form of the word "késar" meaning saffron and Sanskrit द्वीप (dvīpá) meaning island. Sanskrit Késaradvīpah > Elu/Pali kesaradivaya > Sinhala kesaradivayina
