Marchena is one of the 45 states which makes up the United States of America. Located within the Caribbean, the state has a land border with Hipaniola and a maritime border with Puerto Rico to the north

Marchena was once a Spanish colony known as the Marchena Captaincy General (1607-1898). Following the Spanish-American War, the island fell under American control before being fully seized by the US in late 1898. The annexation angered many Marchenians, who had wanted to achieve complete independence. As a result, the Marchenian National Party was founded, and a guerilla fight against the Americans was launched. The war was over by 1901, and the island was occupied by the military.

Marchena would continue to be occupied until 1909, when outgoing President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the departure of American forces and advocated for the establishment of an official Territorial Government. Thousands of migrants from the contiguous United States began to relocate to Marchena during the 8-year occupation, and American contractors began to do business on the island, causing the island's economy to grow. The Territorial Government held a referendum on the islands' status as a result of the significant rise in population, and an overwhelming majority voted in support of statehood.
