Robert Douglas was the second President of Arkiasia to be elected by a direct popular vote. However, in 1852, when he was blocked by the Constitution and Parliament from running for a second term, he staged a coup d'état on 2 December 1852 by dissolving the National Assembly without having the constitutional right to do so. This ended in the successful dissolution of the Arkiasia National Assembly, and the subsequent establishment of a Monarchy the following year.

Robert Douglas took the throne as Robert I on 4 March 1853. During the first years of the Kingdom, his government imposed censorship and harsh repressive measures against his opponents. Some six thousand persons were imprisoned or sent to penal colonies.

With help from the Catholic Church Robert I suppressed the Lutheran Church of Vesperia who constituted the majority of the population at the time by imposing punitive taxes on members of the church. He subsequently demolished churches and imprisoned members who who unable to pay the taxes.

The double-headed eagle symbolizes Robert's unification and control of the Anglo south and the Nordic north.
