Old Uncle Blue was a jumbosan indie folk band formed in Carsaille, Victoire, by college friends Vespasien Baudelaire, Thibault D'aubert and Florian Auclair. They were active from 1989 to 1993. The band's music featured a deliberately low-quality sound, influenced by indie rock and indie folk, but it was also inspired by the rising College Folk scene that Old Uncle Blue was a part of. Baudelaire wrote poetic lyrics that covered a wide range of topics, including love, spirituality, nostalgia, sex, and loneliness. The band was famous for using a wide variety of instruments in their music one typically wouldn't associate with indie folk.
Old Uncle Blue began as Baudelaire's solo song writer project in 1989, but college classmates D'aubert and Auclair quickly joined the project after the three friends found out that they all shared an interest in folk music. Old Uncle Blue released their debut album While the rivers flow in 1990, and the band quickly became a college radio favourite in Victoire. The record was critically acclaimed by critics both from the alternative music scene and the mainstream music scene.
