Death of Clayton Norris
During the 34th lap of the race, Clayton Norris slammed into a concrete barrier on the track, resulting in his death. The exact reason for the crash remains a mystery to this day.
Legacy
Following Norris' death the race was called off, resulting in Nico Paavola being awarded the race win although with only half of the points.
Following the race, the Blackhelm Confederate Grand Prix would be suspended until 2005. Norris' death also ushered in a flurry of new safety regulations meant to improve safety and slow drivers down, including smaller front and rear wings, raised ride heights, grooved tires for less grip, and many others.
