Etymology

Welcome to the fact-book dossier on The City State Rhydin. We hope you will find all information you would like to know about our country here, and otherwise you can always send a communique through proper channels to that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The great houses that survive in the City State of Rhydin, are those that were either exiled or fled after the aftermath of the civil war that devastated their homeland, Machina Haruspex. The houses involved were formed during the wise and sage rule of Emperor Hark'an Ri'Zun, who at the end of the war was executed by usurper Siob Valk Xukuth and in turn thus created the Empire that is the Haruspex today.

The merging of two races into one also set a new course for the homeland, with such progression of genetic manipulation at the birthing stage and so on. These acts, debased the Empire as it was and led to a rift between those who wished to return to the ways of past and those who sought to create a new world order upon the bones of those that had come before.

The civil war was long, and bloody. It decimated areas about the land, and destroyed or sufficiently wrecked several ancient city-states. In the end, those who fought in the name of Hark'an, were defeated. Retreating across the seas to their new home of Rhydin, those loyal followers long plan the day of their return, and the defeat of those who led to the downfall of nobility and honour amongst the Haru peoples.

Though they wish to return home, as long as the Hegemony is controlled by those Houses who led to their downfall, they will keep Rhydin as the rebirth of the Haru people. They will keep the old ways alive, in these modern nights and offer a vision of what could have been before the dark times fell upon them.

Society & Culture

The Hegemony of Rhydin is defined as a Technopoly. As a society in which technology is deified, meaning “the culture seeks its authorization in technology, finds its satisfactions in technology, and takes its orders from technology”. It is characterized by a surplus of information generated by technology, which technological tools are in turn employed to cope with, in order to provide direction and purpose for society and individuals.

In a technocracy, rather than existing in harmony with a theocratic world-view, tools are central to the "thought-world" of the culture. Rhydinian believe that tools "attack culture…[and] bid to become culture", subordinating existing traditions, politics, and religions.

The thought process thus characterises a technocracy as compelled by the "impulse to invent",an ideology first advocated by Francis Bacon in the early 17th Century. He believed that human beings could acquire knowledge about the natural world and use it to "improve the lot of mankind", which led to the idea of invention for its own sake and the idea of progress.

Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, the emerging technocracy has sought to dominate and control nature, a “right” that was chartered early on, but could only be fully carried out with the emergence of modern technology. The more able Rhydinians became to control nature, including their natural bodies, the more fearful they became of the aspects of nature they could not control. This led to the emergence of the Hegemony and it's technocracy based ideologies–a society organized around an ideology of technological progress.

Rhydin is defined as a "totalitarian technocracy", which demands the "submission of all forms of cultural life to the sovereignty of technique and technology". Echoing Ellul’s 1964 conceptualization of technology as autonomous, "self-determinative" independently of human action, and undirected in its growth, technology in a time of Technopoly actively eliminates all other ‘thought-worlds’. Thus, it reduces human life to finding meaning in machines and technique.

They emphasize "artistic creativity, intellectual culture, development of interpersonal relations, or religion as being the realms in which human freedom finds expression and in which human fulfilment is to be found". They adhere to an alternative worldview that values the "exercise of reason in the service of free will" and the ability of technological developments to "serve human ends".

Rhydinians are known to espouse the notions of "efficiency, precision, objectivity", and believe that the notions of myth, and religion must be eliminated for the common good and ascendancy of mankind to a further status of evolution.

This impetus to improve on nature through technology has as its ultimate aim to free the citizenry of Rhydin altogether from the limitations of nature. They seek freedom from the limitations of the earth through the development of space technology, from the limitations of our bodies through computers and robotics, from death through cryogenic freeze, from the limitations of natural reproduction through the New Reproductive Technologies, and from the limitations of birth through obstetric tools.

Underwater Realms

Sea City-States of Rhydin; The Seven Provisional Undersea Realms
* Jusron
The Realm of Wrath, is one of the seven nations which form the imperial hegemony of Rhydin. Ruled by Lord Alaznist Valusria. The eastern border of Jusron is an underwater mountain range known as the Rasp, which starts at the beginning of an oceanic trench in the northwest pocket near the archipelago of the known Rhydin territories.

* Vhaisse
The Realm of Pride, ruled over by Lord Xander Hul. Considered the most powerful of all the realms, and the actual capitol of the hegemony itself. It boasts great trade routes and a central location within the underwater Kodar Mountain range that allows it a great deal of influence over all trade within the empire between its various realms.

* Hurettaa
The Realm of Envy, ruled by Lord Beliar Ius, is one of the seven nations which form the ancient seafaring nation. The land of Hurettaa is rich in resources like rare earth metals, gem stones and iron-ore, and is also filled rich in animal resource with herds of fish and crustaceans roaming the basin of the aforementioned Kodar range.

* Teknil
The Realm of Greed, ruled by Lord Sorshen DeVaco, who maintains her capital of Xin-Teknil within the central region of the realm. In fact, Sorshen's family tomb lies deep within the very pyramid on which Fortress Xin-Teknil was built. Teknil's main source of income is trade with foreign lands, and is also home to many minor corporations that research and design cyberware, and genetic engineering alongst the basis of foodstuffs. It's redlight district is the most famous within the imperial realms.

* Zirnra
The Realm of Feeding, ruled by Lord Zutha Uan. It is a peaceful and plentiful land located within the ze'zhuanth zeklet'tau (Ancient Heaven) pillars overflowing with abundance. Its soil is fertile under the many domes that exist amongst the pillars, and there is always plenty of food left after the harvest. Zirnra makes a lot of profit selling its food to less agriculturally rich realms, as well as foreign lands.

* Rhoquil
The Realm of Scavangers, ruled by Lord Krune Hul, Rhoquil is considered a particularly vicious domain. Its people are, by their very nature, extremely ruthless and many work as the modern day privateers of the imperial Rhydin navy, as well as being one of the largest submarine yards in existence within the hegemony. The other predominant feature of Rhoquil is its aggressive cyberware industries, and a fair portion of the populace is augmented.

* Aphyon
The Realm of Death, ruled by Lord Fenir Hallas, is one of the seven nations which forms the hegemony. Visitors to the realm are often amazed by the opulent palace in the mountain-hollow city of Xin-Aphyon, where Fenir sits and controls the realm from. As the premier source of military forces for all of the realms that form the hegemony, the name of his realm is appropriate. Aphyon is also in charge of creating outposts, fortress stations and the like.

Houses

Vlos: Based out of the provisional ward of Jiv'undus, realm of Jusron. Considered a Minor House.
Renor Velven: Based out of every realm of the hegemony. Considered a Low House as they are one of the oldest but with the weakest influence.
Elemmiire: Based out of the provisional ward of Anhui, Covu, and Jiv'undus, realms of Aphyon, Hurettaa, and Jusron. One of the founding Great Houses.
Ahn Ri'Zun: Based out of the provisional wards of Covu, Zakath, and Anhui, realms of Hurettaa, Rhoquil and Aphyon. Second oldest Great House.
killianen d'l'qu'mados: Based out of all of the realms, however their main holding is within a fortress yard located within the realm of Rhoquil. They are considered to be a great house, first in the line, followed by Elemmiire before all others.

House Roles

Renor Velven: Conscripts. What other nations might refer to as " weekend warriors." They are no less vital and usually tasked with occupational duty, unless needed otherwise. They also perform the vital function of operating MASH units and other medical needs. They are composed of infantry, light-medium armor, and medical/mechanical services.

Vlos: The first and foremost in any fight. They are the ground forces, and conventional armor as well as mechanized legionnaire deployment sections. The fashion of the Rhydinian ability to blitzkrieg their troops in large numbers is due to the high amount of the Vlos. They constitute nearly thirty percent of the total military population.

Elemmiire: Special Forces. Of the ability of say the Spetnaz. They are sea-troopers first and foremost and capable of securing advanced positions, or creating them. Composed of both highly trained infantry, and that of the combat engineer.

Ahn Ri'Zun: The Ahn Ri'Zun are the key to the Imperial Republic's rule and in turn serve as elite shock-troops in correspondence with other regular legionary units. Ahn Ri'Zun are trained from infancy on the provisional ward Sicaria. Sicaria is home to the vicious training grounds of the Ahn Ri'Zun, who fight voraciously in a mock-up of natural selection - ensuring that only the best enter formal service. Unlike many armies of the free world, the intense difficulties of simply surviving the barren undersea terrain and fellow populace on Sicaria leave only the toughest alive.

They follow the same orginizational setup under legions, each composed of ten brigades of roughly 30,000 soldiers each and are a major component of the ground warfare. They also have dedicated artillery, anti-aircraft, anti-armor detachments available to them.

killianen d'l'qu'mados: Swords of the Sea
This is the naval aspect of the Rhydin Hegemony. The official name is killianen d'l'qu'mados, but it also falls under the RIHN (Rhydin Imperial Hegemony Navy), although this has become a secondary naval force, similar to the Renor Velven and the latter more of a specialized force.

Imperial Security Service(ISS)

The ISS is both the police and the first line of defense amongst the citizenry before the true military forces are to be alerted. They maintain the peace, interact with the public in everyday settings and are prevalent throughout the Empire in a variety of settings beyond their mainstay as overseers of the peace and prosperity of the seven realms.

Typical ISS Training is Fifteen Weeks.

Total ISS Officers: 158,000

Imperial Legionnaires

Is the first to fight, first to be deployed force that serves the Hegemony's needs. Highly experienced in both sea and surface urban and open ground combat, and especially dangerous because of the combined arms strategy. The Rhydin Imperial Hegemony Army have immense training, longer then many armies of the various nations, and although they have a very small army, it is highly trained, focused, and not one to be underestimated.

They are seasoned with combat, veterans of dozens of hot spots about the Hegemony and potentially within. The size of a typical legion is 4,200 legionaries and 300 equites, (the infantry are split into 30 maniples of 120 legionaries each), to 5,200 men plus auxiliaries (split into 10 cohorts, 9 of 480 men each, plus the first cohort holding 800 men).

The Imperial Legionaries have their own armor, aircraft, and deployment vessels within the Imperial Vanguard Fleet.

Typical Imperial Training is Thirty-Six Weeks
Total Imperial Military Personnel: 363,590

Rhydin Imperial Hegemon Navy (RIHN)

Considered to be a traditional role alongside the RIHA, the RIHN has weathered the ages and continues to be a source of pride for the Hegemony. It is also the largest of the military branches, as it operates out of all of the ports within the seven realms.

Training is very long at fifty-two weeks. Most if not all combat instructors are seasoned aces, but have also received their formal training by foreign military advisors knowledgable of their equipment.

The RIHN operates a vast fleet that draws from every realm, known as the Imperial Vanguard.

Total RIHN Personnel: 3,459,309
Sea-Troops (Amphibious to Surface Assault Troops): 262,350

Reaching militarily significant age annually:
male: 1,189,567
female: 1,185,889

Military service age and obligation: 16 years of age for voluntary military service
