The Senate of Austeria (Tethian: Senati i Austri), formally known as the National Congress (Kongresi Kombëtar), is the unicameral legislature of Austeria. According to the 1990 Constitution of Austeria, the Senate reflects the popular will of the Austerian people and thus is ultimately the supreme authority of the country.
The Senate is the direct successor of the National People's Congress of Austeria, the legislature of the Austerian People's Republic from 1947 to 2005, and inherited its functions, authority, and its common name. The Senate has the authority to direct the internal and external policies of Austeria, approving and amending the constitution and laws, approving the state budget, ratifying international treaties, granting amnesty, defining the "administrative and territorial structure" of the country, and deciding on popular referendums. It also approves the appointment of the Premier of Austeria, the Council of Ministers, and the two highest courts of Austeria.
The Senate consists of 129 seats elected by single transferable vote from ten multi-member constituencies with two additional seats reserved for the Etrurian and Atudite minority communities. A member of the Senate is known as a Senator who serves a term for four years. The Austerian government is formed through the principle of power-sharing under the D'Hondt method to ensure that the country's main voting blocs participate in governing the country. Seats in the Presidency of Austeria are allocated based on the results of the legislative election
It is currently the fifth session of the Senate since the founding of the Third Republic in 2006. In the 2021 election, the status quo was maintained, allowing the Presidential candidates to remain and Alexandru Minovici to remain as uncontested Premier. The next elections are scheduled for 2025.
